Город Бога — самый бедный и самый криминальный квартал Рио-де-Жанейро. Там рождаются с косяком в одной руке и с пушкой — в другой. Пока малыш Рокет потихоньку растет и мечтает стать фотографом, его ровесники и их старшие братья грабят бензовозы, бегают от коррумпированных полицейских, делят сферы влияния в наркоторговле, а долгими летними вечерами палят друг в друга из ворованных пистолетов.
Чтобы понимать, о чем речь: «Город Бога» — не просто еще один бразильский фильм, это фильм, у которого штук двадцать призов международных фестивалей и всемирное признание (к примеру, не последний британский киножурнал Empire выбрал его лучшей картиной года). Стало уже привычным называть «Город» бразильским вариантом «Хороших парней» Скорсезе, но сравнение, честно говоря, столь точное, что от него не избавиться. Избитые кинематографом Старого и Нового Cвета сюжет и нарративную структуру — фильм поделен на условные главки, сопровождается закадровым комментарием главного героя и возвращается в одни точки по два-три раза бразильцы наполнили бурлящей энергией, и впрямь невиданной с золотых времен Скорсезе. «Украденное детство», «уличная преступность», «нищета третьего мира» — штампы западных газет взрываются в этом коктейле Молотова с убийственной бодростью и каким-то жизнерадостным отчаянием. Закон — тайга, прокурор — медведь. «Я мужчина, — сообщает чумазый мальчонка, — я нюхаю кокаин и курю марихуану, я грабил и убивал». Непрофессиональные актеры — в основном дети — играют с достоверностью, в данном случае пугающей, — но в этой квазидокументальности нет ничего спекулятивного, в ней — настоящее. Жизнь настоящая, смерть настоящая и кино настоящее.
